Outside the development, the Wairarapa has a number of attractions from walking and hunting in the Tararua Mountain range, to scuba diving or fishing at the coast. There are many access points for tramping in the Tararuas, which form the western boundary of the Wairarapa. The highest point in the Tararua range is Mitre Peak , at 1571 metres (5154 feet).

The Wairarapa has several areas of outstanding beauty; its uncongested country roads are perfect for cycling or simply enjoying a drive through the lovely countryside. There are a number of public reserves and forest park areas throughout the Wairarapa, and the coastline boasts many idyllic spots for picnics, walks or relaxation.
